Assynt Development Trust has now taken on administration of the local tourism group, Discover Assynt. This was by the request of the previous voluntary administration panel, and with general consent of local tourism business operators.
Check out the new Discover Assynt website, built by JP Design, here: www.discoverassynt.co.uk/.
As well as launching this new website, ADT ran an Assynt Tourism Forum in March 2019, with presentations from Highland Campervans and others. See Ewen McLachlan’s blog article about that forum here: www.discoverassynt.co.uk/post/assynt-tourist-forum.
In 2018, a mini Tourist Information hub was run by volunteer staff in the foyer of ADT’s Lochinver Mission building. This Tourist Information facility has now been relocated to Assynt Leisure Centre, where a bigger space and full-time dedicated staffing make for a much better service.
This newly located service now features many of the popular displays from the old Tourist Information Centre.*
(* The building which used to be Lochinver Visitor Centre had been run by Visit Scotland for Tourist Information until around 2016. However, a rent increase by its then-owner based outside of Scotland, coupled with a change in strategy by Visit Scotland more towards online resources, led to the closure of that public building. We are very pleased that the old Visitor Centre building is now being purchased by a young local couple who have planning permission granted to redevelop it and operate it as a restaurant. This is great news for the local community and for visitors, especially given the recent loss of two local eateries for evening meals.)
