Stoer School was formally closed by Highland Council due to falling school roll. This followed on from the closure of other Assynt primary schools, Drumbeg Primary School and Elphin Primary School in earlier decades, and leaves only Lochinver Primary school remaining, with a fluctuating school roll.
Highland Council had put the school on the open market, but then withdrew it from the market following criticism from groups including ADT, who highlighted a stated need to consult first on possible community use. Highland Council then appointed architect Iain Livesley to work up several design options for development of the former school and its grounds, including housing use, and approached ADT to run a community consultation on these options for development. Below is the link to the consultation report:

Since then, Highland Council are now working to convert the building into 3 affordable housing units, in recognition of the high need for affordable housing in Assynt.
